Fortunately, when booking a flight, certain airlines have legal offset options for purchase. If you're flying with these airlines, these are a few of the best services to take advantage of.

British Airways (BAC): British Airways is rapidly establishing itself as the industry's most efficient carbon offset provider. British Airways' parent company, IAG, has set a target of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050, and it is making good progress against that goal. The airline revealed earlier this month that it will cover the cost of carbon offsets on all domestic flights it runs (£3 million a year). This translates to 75 carbon-neutral flights a day. Its offset funds are used to preserve forests in Peru and Cambodia and to provide safe cooking stoves in Darfur, Sudan, thanks to a collaboration with the charity Pure Leapfrog.

Qantas (Australian Airlines): The funds collected by Qantas' offset schemes help indigenous peoples' sustainable growth and the Great Barrier Reef's regeneration. By 2050, the Australian flag carrier has pledged to reduce net emissions by half. Since July, passengers can earn 10 Qantas Points for every dollar spent on carbon offsets. According to Qantas, passengers book an offset every 59 seconds.

Virgin Australia:- Virgin Australia donates offset funds to programs such as the Tasmanian Land Conservancy, which aims to protect 30,000 acres of protected Tasmanian woodland. A year, the carrier claims to cover 50,000 metric tons of greenhouse emissions.

Delta: By the purchase of carbon credits, Delta voluntarily capped its carbon emissions at 2012 levels. Delta's offset funds have previously gone to the International Small Group & Tree Planting Program, which reverses deforestation in countries like Kenya and Uganda; the Kariba Project, which preserves forests in Zimbabwe; and the Brazilian Bandeira & Capelli Project, which promotes more environmentally friendly development activities in the region.

Air New Zealand: Customers' contributions to the airline's FlyNeutral scheme go to forest regeneration programs registered with the New Zealand government under the Permanent Forest Sink Initiative, which encourages landowners to save carbon-absorbing forest areas. Natural areas such as New Zealand's Hinewai Reserve, Pigeon Bush Reserve, and Chatham Island Forest have benefited from Air New Zealand's offsets.

United: To aid protect forests in northern Peru, the Chicago-based carrier sends offset funds to Conservation International's Alto Mayo Forest Carbon Project. United recently unveiled a $40 million research investment to further promote the production of renewable aviation fuels.
