A shooting or burning pain is also described as neuropathic pain. In its own, it may go down, but sometimes it is persistent. It is unrelenting and serious sometimes and it comes and goes sometimes. It is always the result of nerve injury or a nervous system that is malfunctioning. The result of nerve disruption is a difference in the activity of the nerves at both the injury site and the areas surrounding it.

One example of neuropathic pain is called the condition of the phantom limb. When an arm or a leg has been lost due to disease or accident, this unusual disorder happens, but the brain nevertheless receives pain signals from the nerves that initially carried impulses from the missing organ. These nerves are misfiring and causing discomfort now.

Sometimes, neuropathic pain appears to have no clear cause. But some common causes of pain with neuropathy include:-

  • With alcoholism
  • Amputations
  • Chemo-therapy
  • For diabetes
  • Problems with the Facial Nerve
  • AIDS or HIV infection
  • Myeloma multiples
  • Several sclerosis

Diagnosing Neuropathic Pain:- A doctor will perform an assessment and physical examination to diagnose neuropathic pain. They can ask questions about how you explain the pain, why the pain happens, or when the pain is caused by something specific. Your doctor will also inquire about your risk factors for neuropathic pain and can order monitoring of both your blood and nerves.

Neuropathic Pain Management:- The first line of treatment is mostly anticonvulsant and antidepressant medications. Some reports of neuropathic pain indicate that the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as Aleve or Motrin (NSAIDs) can alleviate pain. A stronger painkiller may be needed by certain individuals. Make sure to clarify with the doctor the pros and cons of the medication you take. When another disease, such as diabetes, is involved, the suffering can be alleviated by improved treatment of the illness. Efficient condition control can also aid in avoiding additional injury to the nerve. In cases that are difficult to administer, an invasive or implantable procedure can be used by a pain doctor to control the pain efficiently. Pressure effects can be dramatically regulated by electrical stimulation of the nerves involved in neuropathic pain.

Neuropathic pain, however, sometimes responds poorly to traditional pain treatments and will occasionally get worse over time rather than better. It will result in extreme disabilities for certain persons. However a multidisciplinary method that incorporates treatments may be a very successful way to deliver neuropathic pain relief.
